Contest time!
Cold Cuts Merch and Wass Photography have teamed up to do something really cool. Each month they release a new pair of “live shot” shirts from two bands and put them up on Cold Cuts’ site to buy under the name Live Shot Charity Tees. The cool part about this is that all of the proceeds go to a different charity for each shirt.
The most recent pair is from With The Punches and I Call Fives. Today, we are starting a contest to win a free With The Punches shirt! The goal of this shirt is to raise money for Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. Here is an official statement from With The Punches themselves on their reasoning to do this:
“With budget cuts threatening arts programs in schools across the country, music programs are almost always the first to go. Thousands of schools all over the United States have experienced cuts in visual arts and music programs and more are threatened everyday. Mr. Holland’s Opus takes new and refurbished instruments and donates them to schools and music programs that cannot afford them, allowing students to learn and play music where they would normally not be able to. All of us in With The Punches have been fortunate enough to experience the benefits of great public school music programs and feel strongly about the importance of music in a student’s life. We were all lucky enough to have our lives enriched by music and hope that younger generations can afford the same opportunities. “
The way to enter this contest: just reblog this post! You can reblog as many times as you’d like. That’s it! The contest ends Saturday May 26th at midnight EST. Technically May 27th, but whatever. Once the contest is over, a contest will be randomly selected and will win a free With The Punches shirt in any size and have it shipped to them.
Some suggestions would be to like all these guys on facebook so you can stay updated on all their stuff and see more cool stuff. It’s not necessary but would be cool.

Stickup Kid - Nothing About Me - Review
Stickup Kid is a five-piece pop punk band from San Jose, California. Their second EP, Nothing About Me, packs a punch and has something in it for fans of all genres.

Overall: 3.5/5

FFO: Turnover, Second to Last, The Story So Far, Polar Bear Club, Basement

1. Breathing (3.5/5)
“Breathing” does just that; it breathes a bit as the first notes are extended, then it throws itself headfirst into an onslaught of pop punk. This song could be called an intro, I suppose, although it feels more like an actual song in and of itself. It drags on, but not in a bad way; it’s a short song that feels longer than the mere minute and thirty seconds it actually is.

2. Lighthouse (4.25/5)
The previous opener leads right into this one, carrying the same general emotion and feel that was set from the start. The guitars in the beginning are driving and carry the song through, along with the vocals in the verse. This song bleeds of honesty, which you can hear both lyrically and vocally (in the emotional harmonies). The clean section about two minutes in fits perfectly and is reminiscent of post-rock such as This Will Destroy You or Explosions in the Sky. It leads to a grand build up. Overall, it’s a great song that has several dynamics contributing to its greatness.

3. Dreaming of Kenny Rogers (3.25/5)

“Dreaming of Kenny Rogers” carries the general tone throughout until the fast-paced punk beat kicks in. This song is a bit experimental vocally, and although it is short, it’s a good track.

4. You Are Captain Hook (4/5)
Starting off a bit different than the others (this one doesn’t have a punk beat to start), “You Are Captain Hook” explores the alternative side of Stickup Kid. It’s hard to pin a sound on them; one can tell they are influenced by a variety of different artists, but their general sound can be classified as “pop punk.” As previously stated, however, this track really shows their diversity and willingness to explore new things that aren’t typically done from a band in this scene. The bass that finds its way through this song really compliments the drums in certain parts and keeps the song going along; a really nice touch, for sure.

5. The Weather Outside is Weather (3/5)
In contrast to the diverse track that preceded it, this last song sounds a bit typical. It keeps the formula most pop punk bands generate, but it is top notch, no doubt. The emotions of this song are really what set it apart, however. It carries a lot of heart and passion, one can easily tell. It’s a good closing song to a short but sweet EP.

It’s a good EP. They have a distinct sound, which is a good thing to have in an oversaturated scene. Pop punk can be such a formulated genre, so it’s nice to see a band step out of line and “bend the rules” a bit. They have lots of distinct and memorable parts on this, adding to lasting value and overall musicianship. Good release.

Overall: 3.5/5
